Wistman's Wood is one of the most magical places on Dartmoor, an ancient stunted oak woodland draped in moss and lichen that has survived on the open moor for thousands of years. This 4-mile walk from Two Bridges follows the West Dart River to reach this extraordinary natural wonder.

The Route

Begin at the Two Bridges car park on the B3357 and follow the path north alongside the West Dart River. The river is beautiful throughout, tumbling over granite boulders in a series of small cascades. After about a mile, Wistman's Wood appears on the hillside above, its gnarled oaks growing between moss-covered boulders in an arrangement that looks like something from a fairy tale.

The wood itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and visitors should stay on the path to protect the fragile ecosystem. The oaks, rarely more than 4 metres tall, are draped in polypody ferns and lichens. The atmosphere is ancient and otherworldly. Continue upstream for another half mile before turning back. The return follows the same path, equally beautiful in the opposite direction.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off lead on the open moor but must be on leads through Wistman's Wood to protect the sensitive habitat. The river provides excellent swimming spots and most dogs enjoy the rocky stream. Keep dogs under control near livestock. The terrain is uneven with boulders and tussocky grass.
