Dog Walks in Hampstead

1 walk to explore with your dog in Hampstead, Greater London

Hampstead is the closest thing inner London has to a proper country walk. Perched on a hill above the city and wrapped around 800 acres of heath, it feels less like a district and more like a village that happens to have a Tube station. For dog owners living in zones one and two, Hampstead Heath is the single best off-lead space in the capital — wilder than any royal park, bigger than most people realise, and genuinely useful as a daily exercise ground rather than just a Sunday treat.

The village itself is a warren of Georgian streets, independent bookshops and pubs that have been welcoming muddy dogs for two hundred years. On a weekend morning you'll see every breed imaginable being walked up Flask Walk towards the Heath, and the whole area has a settled, dog-literate feel. The Heath isn't landscaped either — it's a mix of ancient woodland, grassland, ponds and scrub that supports real wildlife, and you can genuinely get lost in the middle of it for a couple of hours.

Best Dog Walks in Hampstead

The Hampstead Heath Parliament Hill Walk (4 miles, easy) is the definitive route and the one every London dog should do at least once. It climbs gently from the South End Green entrance up to Parliament Hill — one of the best protected views in London, looking across St Paul's and the City skyline — before looping through the woodland around Kenwood House and the bathing ponds. Much of it is genuinely off-lead friendly, and on a clear morning the summit is a brilliant spot for a tennis-ball session with the city laid out below. The paths are wide and well-maintained, which makes the route comfortable year-round.

Planning Your Visit

Hampstead and Belsize Park Tube stations are both under ten minutes from the Heath's main entrances, and Hampstead Heath Overground is even closer to the south side. Dogs are welcome off-lead almost everywhere on the Heath except the bathing ponds, where swimming is strictly for humans. Cattle graze parts of the Heath in summer to manage the grassland, so be alert to temporary fenced areas. The Flask is a long-established dog-friendly Hampstead pub just off the village high street, Hampstead Creperie is the traditional post-walk stop on the corner, and Hampstead Hound Walks and Bark and Bath Grooming Studio cover walking and grooming if you need either. London Veterinary Specialists is handy to know about locally too.
