Dog Walks in Wimbledon

1 walk to explore with your dog in Wimbledon, Greater London

Wimbledon is best known for two weeks of tennis every summer, but for London dog owners it's famous for something rather different — Wimbledon Common. Combined with neighbouring Putney Heath, it adds up to 1,140 acres of open ground, woodland and ponds just seven miles from Westminster, and it's one of the finest off-lead dog walking areas anywhere in the city.

The common is genuinely wild in places. You get scrubby heath, gorse, silver birch, oak woodland, and a good scattering of small ponds and bogs that the local dogs treat as private swimming pools. Unlike the landscaped royal parks, the paths here are mostly informal — sandy tracks, bridleways and grass rides — which gives the whole place a much more countryside feel than the postcode suggests. The old windmill on the common's northern edge is the local landmark and a useful waypoint for anyone new to the area.

Best Dog Walks in Wimbledon

The Wimbledon Common Walk (4 miles, easy) is the classic circuit and takes in most of what makes this place special. A typical loop starts at the windmill car park, drops down through the birch woods to Rushmere Pond, follows the bridleway south towards Caesar's Camp (an Iron Age hillfort hidden in the trees), and loops back across the open heath with a good chance of seeing one of the resident green woodpeckers. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle undulations, and much of the route is off-lead friendly for dogs with reliable recall. On weekends you'll see joggers, horse riders and a steady procession of local dogs, all sharing the same wide tracks.

Planning Your Visit

The free car park next to the windmill is the best starting point and has a small cafe attached. Wimbledon and Putney stations are both a walk away if you're coming in by train. The common does have a few hazards worth knowing about — the boggy ground around the ponds can stain white fur yellow, and horses have right of way on the bridleways. Ticks are present in the longer grass from spring to autumn, so a quick check after walks is sensible. There's no livestock grazing, which is unusual for a space this size, so recall-trained dogs can enjoy long off-lead stretches. Dog walks in Wimbledon are an easy fix for any London dog that needs more space than the local park can offer, and the village itself has several dog-friendly Wimbledon cafes back up the hill for a post-walk coffee.
