Dog Walks in Hampshire

106 beautiful walks to explore with your dog in Hampshire, South East

Hampshire delivers a kind of walking you don't really find anywhere else in the UK. The county is dominated by the New Forest — the largest area of lowland heath, unenclosed woodland and pasture left in Western Europe — and supplemented by the chalk of the South Downs and a long coastline stretching from the Solent to the Isle of Purbeck. For dogs, it's an embarrassment of riches.

The New Forest is unique in Britain. It's genuinely open: no fences between the villages and the forest, livestock roaming freely across roads and lawns, and a network of ancient rights of way and enclosures that you can wander almost indefinitely. Nothing else in England feels quite like it.

Top Areas for Dog Walks in Hampshire

Lyndhurst (4 walks) is the capital of the New Forest and the most practical base — Tall Trees, Ober Water, Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and the long link to Bolderwood are all on the doorstep. Lymington (2) adds a coastal flavour with Hatchet Pond and the Lepe Country Park walk along the Solent shore. Petersfield (1) and Alresford (1) extend the map into the South Downs and the Itchen valley chalk streams.

What to Expect

The New Forest rules are the big thing to understand: free-roaming ponies, cattle and pigs have absolute right of way, and dogs must never chase or harass them. Keep leads on around any livestock, and be aware that ground-nesting birds protect the lawns from March to July. Ticks are notoriously common across the forest — check your dog after every walk. The Solent tides are powerful, and some coastal sections become impassable at high water.

Planning Your Trip

The New Forest is one of the most organised dog-friendly Hampshire destinations in the country — pubs, cafes, B&Bs and campsites all cater to dog owners as a matter of course. Lyndhurst, Lymington, Brockenhurst and Beaulieu all have solid clusters of dog-welcoming spots, and there are hundreds of dog-friendly cottages scattered through the villages. The South West Mainline and the Lymington branch make car-free visits easy from London and Southampton. Pack a tick remover, a lead and a lot of patience for slow-driving ponies, and you'll have a brilliant weekend.
