Dog Walks in Lyndhurst
18 walks to explore with your dog in Lyndhurst, Hampshire
Lyndhurst is the capital of the New Forest and the obvious base for any dog-walking trip into this unique landscape. Unlike most national parks, the New Forest is a lowland mix of open heath, ancient woodland, boggy valleys and grazing commons — and crucially, it's all connected, so you can walk for hours without crossing a single road.
The town itself is small, handsome and geared towards visitors, with tearooms, outdoor shops and the New Forest Heritage Centre for the backstory. What makes Lyndhurst special for dog owners is that the walking starts the moment you leave the car park — there's no drive to the trailhead, no ticket barriers, just open commoners' land where your dog can stretch out. You'll almost certainly encounter free-roaming ponies, cattle and pigs, which is part of the experience but takes some getting used to.
Best Dog Walks in Lyndhurst
The New Forest Tall Trees Walk (3 miles, easy) is a beautiful introduction — a signposted loop through mature ornamental conifers that feels almost cathedral-like on a still morning. The New Forest Ober Water Walk (3.5 miles, easy) is the one to do with a dog that loves paddling, following a clear heathland stream through birch and oak. Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary Walk has reliable deer-watching and is easy underfoot, though you'll need your dog firmly on a lead through the sanctuary itself. For a full day, the Lyndhurst to Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary Walk (7 miles, moderate) links the village to the sanctuary through some of the best woodland in the forest.
Planning Your Visit
Park at the main Lyndhurst car park or at any of the Forestry England car parks dotted through the forest — Bolderwood, Rhinefield and Ober Water are all great starting points. The biggest thing to know: New Forest livestock has right of way, and dogs must never chase ponies, cattle or pigs. Keep leads on around animals and in the immediate run-up to April to July when ground-nesting birds are active. The Pig Shed Cafe is a handy dog-friendly Lyndhurst stop, and New Forest Lodge Hotel and New Forest Home Boarding are useful if you need somewhere to stay or leave the dog for the day.
