New Forest Hatchet Pond Walk

Hatchet Pond is the largest natural body of water in the New Forest, a picturesque pond surrounded by heathland and ancient woodland. This walk combines the pond with expansive open heathland and quiet forest tracks.
The Route
Start from the Hatchet Pond car park and circuit the pond before heading south across open heathland. The heather-clad landscape stretches in all directions, with New Forest ponies and cattle grazing freely. Follow forest tracks through Denny Wood, a beautiful area of ancient oak and beech, before looping back to the pond via Hatchet Moor.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off-lead across the heathland and in the forest. Between 1 March and 31 August, dogs must be on leads on the open forest to protect ground-nesting birds. Dogs can swim in Hatchet Pond. The New Forest ponies and cattle are used to dogs but keep your distance.
Practical Information
Free car park at Hatchet Pond. No facilities at the pond. The nearest refreshments are in Beaulieu, about 3 miles away. Wellies advisable in winter as the paths can be muddy.
