Butser Hill is the highest point on the South Downs at 270 metres, offering panoramic views across Hampshire and towards the Isle of Wight. This walk follows a section of the South Downs Way national trail across chalk grassland rich in wildflowers and butterflies.

The Route

Start from the Queen Elizabeth Country Park visitor centre and climb steadily through mixed woodland to the open chalk grassland. The path joins the South Downs Way and follows the ridge to Butser Hill summit. On clear days, the views extend to the Solent and the Isle of Wight to the south, and across the Weald to the north. Return via the quieter western slopes through the country park.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead on most of the route but should be on leads through livestock grazing areas. The chalk grassland is excellent for dogs, with firm, well-drained paths and interesting terrain. No water sources on the ridge so carry your own. The country park section has some woodland shade.

Practical Information
