Symonds Yat Rock is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in England, a limestone cliff 120 metres above a dramatic meander of the River Wye. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs and can often be seen from the viewing platform. This walk explores the viewpoint and the ancient woodland of the Wye Valley.

The Route

Start from the Forestry England car park and follow the trail to Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint. From there, descend through ancient woodland of beech and oak on the Wye Valley Walk to the river. Cross by the hand-pulled rope ferry (one of the last in England) and climb back through Highmeadow Woods on the opposite bank. Return along the ridge to the start.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome throughout but must be on leads near the cliff edges. The woodland paths are excellent for off-lead walking in the forest sections. The rope ferry allows dogs. The River Wye has swimming spots at the ferry crossing. The steep descents may challenge elderly dogs.

Practical Information
