Dog Walks in Canterbury

2 walks to explore with your dog in Canterbury, Kent

Canterbury is one of the most historic cities in England, dominated by its medieval cathedral and the old pilgrim streets that still run beneath the city walls. It's not an obvious dog-walking destination at first glance — the narrow lanes and tourist crowds can feel claustrophobic for a nervous dog — but step just a few minutes beyond the ring road and you're into the ancient woodland and chalk downland that make east Kent quietly brilliant for a weekend with the dog.

The city makes a comfortable base: dog-friendly cafes are plentiful, there's direct rail access from London, and the Stour Valley walking routes thread through the water meadows just behind the cathedral precincts. Canterbury also gives you quick access to the north Kent coast, which opens up a completely different kind of day out within twenty minutes of the city.

Best Dog Walks in Canterbury

The Blean Woods and the Ancient Forest walk (3 miles, easy) is the local classic — one of the largest continuous blocks of ancient woodland in southern England, with waymarked trails through oak, coppiced hornbeam and birch that suit dogs of any age and fitness. It's managed by the RSPB, quiet outside summer weekends, and the surface is kind on older joints. For a different landscape, the Whitstable Coastal Path to Tankerton Slopes (4 miles, easy) swaps trees for sea air, running along the shingle promenade from Whitstable harbour out to the grassy slopes and colourful beach huts — a brilliant flat walk for dogs that love open water and a cooling paddle at low tide.

Planning Your Visit

Blean Woods has a free RSPB car park off Rough Common Road, and Whitstable's main seafront car parks are pay-and-display. Blean's paths are soft and can get properly muddy in winter, so waterproof boots and a towel in the boot are sensible. Whitstable has seasonal dog restrictions on the central town beach but Tankerton is dog-friendly all year. Canterbury itself is genuinely dog-welcoming — The Goods Shed Restaurant and its associated farmers' market will happily seat you with the dog, Steep Street Coffee House has water bowls out front, and for anything behavioural Kent Canine Academy is well respected locally. Dog walks in Canterbury pair naturally with a long lunch and a wander through the cathedral precincts afterwards.
