Whitstable Coastal Path to Tankerton Slopes
Canterbury, Kent
This coastal walk follows the Saxon Shore Way from Whitstable harbour along the seafront to Tankerton Slopes, a grassy hillside overlooking the Thames Estuary. The famous "Street" - a natural shingle spit extending half a mile into the sea at low tide - is the walk's centrepiece.
The Route
Start at Whitstable harbour and walk east along the promenade past the colourful beach huts. Continue along the sea wall to Tankerton, where grassy slopes rise above the beach. Descend to the beach to explore the Street at low tide (check tide times). Return along the slopes for elevated views across the estuary to Sheppey and Essex beyond.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs are banned from the main Tankerton beach from May to September but welcome year-round on the shingle sections near the harbour and west of Whitstable. The grassy slopes are excellent for off-lead play with wonderful views. Dogs love exploring the Street at low tide.
