Route Overview

The Denton Reservoir Loop is a compact but delightful 1.9-mile circular walk around one of south Lincolnshire's hidden gems. Tucked away in the quiet countryside between Grantham and the Belvoir ridge, Denton Reservoir is a small but scenic body of water surrounded by grassy banks, mature hedgerows, and open farmland. This short loop is perfect for a quick morning walk, an after-work outing, or a gentle stroll with dogs who prefer shorter distances.

The route follows a clear path around the reservoir's perimeter, passing through a mix of mown grassland and rougher meadow areas. The reservoir itself is a popular fishing spot, and the banks are well maintained by the local angling club. The water attracts a variety of birdlife, including swans, Canada geese, mallards, and the occasional visiting heron. In winter, flocks of teal and wigeon can sometimes be spotted on the water.

From the higher ground on the southern side, there are pleasant views across the reservoir to the village of Denton and the gently rolling countryside beyond. The terrain is entirely flat to gently sloping, with no stiles, gates, or obstacles to negotiate. The path surface is a mixture of compacted earth and grass, generally firm but softening after wet weather.

Despite its small size, the reservoir loop packs in a surprising amount of interest. The wildflower margins support butterflies and bees in summer, the mature trees attract woodpeckers and nuthatches, and the quiet atmosphere makes it feel much more remote than its proximity to Grantham might suggest. It is the sort of unpretentious local walk that becomes a treasured regular haunt for dog owners in the area.

Dog-Friendly Features

The Denton Reservoir Loop is an excellent off-lead walk for well-behaved dogs. The open grassland around the reservoir provides plenty of space for running and exploring, and the visibility is good in all directions. Dogs can be off lead for the entire circuit, though they should be kept away from anglers and their tackle on the reservoir banks - fishing lines and hooks can be dangerous.

The reservoir banks provide access to the water for dogs who enjoy a paddle, though the banks are relatively steep in places. The shallow, reedy margins at the eastern end offer the safest access point. The water is clean but can develop algal bloom in late summer - check for green discolouration before allowing your dog to enter.

There are no livestock on the reservoir loop itself, though adjacent fields may contain sheep or cattle. The path is fenced from neighbouring farmland in most places. Dog waste bins are not provided, so carry bags and take waste home. The short distance and gentle terrain make this walk suitable for puppies, elderly dogs, and those recovering from surgery or injury.

Getting There & Parking

Denton Reservoir is located approximately 4 miles south-west of Grantham, accessed via the A607 towards Melton Mowbray. Turn south at the signed junction for Denton and follow the lane into the village. A small informal parking area is available near the reservoir entrance, with space for approximately six vehicles. On-street parking in Denton village provides additional capacity. The reservoir is also accessible on foot from Grantham via a network of footpaths, approximately 4 miles each way.

There is no public transport directly to the reservoir. The nearest bus route runs along the A607, from where it is approximately a one-mile walk to the site.

Seasonal Tips

This walk is enjoyable year-round, though each season brings a different character. Spring is beautiful, with wildflowers emerging on the grassy banks and nesting birds busy on the water. Summer is the warmest time for dog swimming, though watch for algal bloom and keep walks to the cooler parts of the day.

Autumn brings subtle colours to the hedgerows and the fishing season creates a lively atmosphere on the banks. Winter offers crisp, quiet walks with excellent birdwatching as winter migrants arrive on the reservoir. The path can become soft and muddy between November and March - wellingtons or waterproof boots are recommended during this period.

The reservoir is not lit and there are no hard-surfaced paths, so in winter you will need to time your walk to finish before dusk. Early morning visits are particularly rewarding for birdwatching and for avoiding other visitors.

Nearby Facilities

There are no facilities at the reservoir itself - no toilets, cafes, or shops. The Welby Arms in Denton village is a charming country pub serving food and drinks, and dogs are welcome in the bar area. For a wider range of facilities, Grantham town centre is approximately 4 miles to the north-east and has cafes, shops, supermarkets, and veterinary services.

The walk is short enough that most visitors will not need refreshments during the walk itself, but carrying water for your dog is always advisable, particularly during warmer months.
