Route Overview

Hartsholme Country Park is one of Lincoln's finest outdoor spaces, offering a beautiful 2.6-mile walk through a mixture of woodland, lakeside paths, and open grassland on the south-western edge of the city. The park covers over 200 acres and centres on a Victorian-era lake that was originally part of the Hartsholme Hall estate. Today it is managed by the City of Lincoln Council as a country park and Local Nature Reserve, providing an exceptional outdoor experience that feels far more rural than its city-fringe location might suggest.

The main circular route follows well-maintained paths around the lake, through mature mixed woodland, and across wildflower meadows. Starting from the main car park, you descend gently to the lakeside where the path winds between mature willows and alders with views across the water to the wooded banks beyond. The lake is home to swans, grebes, and a variety of ducks, and the reed beds at the far end attract secretive species such as reed warblers and water rails during the breeding season.

The woodland sections are varied, with areas of ancient broadleaved woodland, conifer plantations, and more recent planting creating different atmospheres as you progress through the park. The paths are well surfaced with compacted gravel on the main routes and more natural surfaces on the secondary trails that branch off into quieter areas. The terrain is gently undulating, with no significant climbs.

Hartsholme also connects to Swanholme Lakes, a further nature reserve to the east, and it is possible to extend the walk considerably by linking the two sites. The park is well used by local dog walkers, joggers, and families, but its size means it never feels overcrowded even on popular days.

Hartsholme Country Park is located on Skellingthorpe Road, approximately 2 miles south-west of Lincoln city centre. The postcode LN6 0EY will bring you to the main entrance. There is a large free car park with space for over 100 vehicles, though it can fill on sunny weekends and bank holidays. An overflow area provides additional capacity during peak times.

The park is accessible by bus, with services running along Skellingthorpe Road stopping near the entrance. Lincoln Central railway station is approximately 3 miles away, and a taxi takes around 10 minutes. Cycling to the park is straightforward via the quiet residential roads of south-west Lincoln.

Seasonal Tips

Spring brings bluebells to the woodland floor and the lake comes alive with nesting birds. The wildflower meadows begin their display in late spring and continue through summer, attracting butterflies and bees in abundance. Summer is the best season for dog swimming, though the park can be busy during school holidays and the car park fills early on hot days.

Autumn is magnificent, with the mixed woodland creating a spectacular show of colour reflected in the still waters of the lake. Winter walking is peaceful and atmospheric - the bare trees open up views across the park and the lake attracts winter wildfowl. The main gravel paths remain firm in all weather, though the secondary trails can become muddy between November and March.

A visitor centre near the car park houses a small cafe serving hot and cold drinks, snacks, and light meals. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating area. Public toilets are available at the visitor centre. The park also has a camping and caravan site for those who want to extend their visit.
