Hubbard's Hills is Louth's hidden gem, a beautiful wooded valley where the River Lud flows through a narrow gorge carved during the last ice age. This 3-mile walk combines the valley with riverside meadows and the historic market town.

The Route

Start from the Hubbard's Hills car park and enter the valley. The path follows the River Lud through a steep-sided wooded gorge with mature beech and sycamore trees creating a green canopy overhead. The river tumbles over small weirs and rocky sections, creating a peaceful soundtrack. Bridges cross the stream at intervals, allowing you to explore both banks.

At the far end of the valley, continue along the river through water meadows to the edge of Louth. Return via the path along the opposite bank, which climbs higher through the woodland for different perspectives. The valley is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden, and in spring when the woodland floor is carpeted with wild garlic.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome and can be off lead in the valley, though leads are needed in the meadow sections where livestock may graze. The River Lud is shallow and clean, perfect for dogs to paddle and play. The valley is sheltered from wind, making it a good choice in poor weather. The main paths are well-maintained.
