Water of Leith Walkway - Dean Village to Stockbridge
Edinburgh, Lothian
The Water of Leith Walkway follows Edinburgh's river from the Pentland Hills to the port of Leith. The section through Dean Village and on to Stockbridge is the most picturesque, passing through a wooded gorge that feels like countryside despite being minutes from Princes Street.
The Route
Start at Dean Village, a medieval milling village hidden in a gorge below the modern city. Follow the river downstream past St Bernard's Well (a Roman-style temple) and through lush woodland. Emerge at Stockbridge with its independent shops and Sunday market. For a longer walk, continue to the Royal Botanic Garden or upstream to Colinton Dell.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off lead along the walkway. The river is shallow enough for paddling in many spots. The path is paved throughout this section, making it accessible in all weathers. Dean Village and Stockbridge both have dog-friendly cafes. Keep dogs on leads when crossing roads at street level.
Practical Information
No dedicated car park - street parking in Dean Village or Stockbridge (pay-and-display). Well served by buses. The Stockbridge Tap and The Antiquary are excellent dog-friendly pubs at the finish. The Sunday Stockbridge Market is a lovely end to the walk. Toilets in Stockbridge.
