Water of Leith Walkway: Dean Village to Stockbridge
Edinburgh, Lothian
The Water of Leith Walkway follows the river through a green corridor that feels surprisingly wild for the centre of Edinburgh. This section between Dean Village and Stockbridge passes under the towering Dean Bridge, through a wooded gorge and past galleries and cafes.
The Route
Start at Dean Village, a beautifully preserved former milling community tucked below the Georgian New Town. Follow the riverside path upstream through the wooded gorge beneath Dean Bridge (designed by Thomas Telford, 30 metres above). The path winds through mature woodland with the river tumbling over weirs and rocks. Pass St Bernard's Well, a Roman-style temple over a mineral spring. Continue to Stockbridge, a vibrant neighbourhood with independent shops, cafes and a Sunday farmers' market.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off-lead on the riverside path as it is set back from roads. The river is accessible at several points for paddling. The gorge section is shaded and cool in summer, and the path is well-maintained year-round. Both Dean Village and Stockbridge have dog-friendly cafes.
Practical Information
No dedicated car park - use street parking in Dean Village or Stockbridge. Easily accessible by bus. The path is surfaced throughout and pushchair-friendly. Can be extended in either direction along the Water of Leith Walkway.
