Dog Walks in Norfolk

9 beautiful walks to explore with your dog in Norfolk, East of England

Norfolk is the great coastal county of the East, and for dog owners it's one of the most rewarding corners of the UK to visit. Huge tidal beaches, pine-backed dunes, salt marshes alive with wading birds and the inland mosaic of the Broads make Norfolk feel completely different to the rest of England. If your dog's idea of heaven is sprinting across wet sand at low tide, this is the place.

The county's big skies are the first thing most people notice — there's very little high ground anywhere in Norfolk, which means the light is extraordinary and the walking is overwhelmingly easy on old bones. It's a county that suits older dogs, young dogs and anyone with a relaxed pace.

Top Areas for Dog Walks in Norfolk

Wells-next-the-Sea (4 walks) is the standout base — a handsome harbour town with Holkham Beach and its pine woods a short stroll away, plus the Stiffkey salt marshes and the Burnham Overy coast path within easy reach. Cromer, Sheringham, Holt and Blakeney each contribute one further walk and spread the map nicely across the north coast, while Norwich adds an inland anchor point with riverside walks and access to the Broads.

What to Expect

Norfolk's coast path is flat, well-waymarked and easy underfoot, but the tides deserve serious respect — the flats off Wells and Stiffkey come in faster than you'd believe, and dogs that wander out on the sand can get caught out. Ground-nesting birds breed on parts of Holkham Beach between April and September, and the signed lead-only zones move each year, so check at the notice board. Livestock (mostly cattle) graze some of the marshland sections of the coast path, and adders can be encountered in dune grass on sunny days.

Planning Your Trip

The north Norfolk coast is one of the most genuinely dog-friendly Norfolk stretches you'll find — Wells, Burnham Market, Holt and Cley all have multiple cafes, delis and pubs that actively welcome dogs indoors. There's a huge selection of dog-welcoming holiday cottages, and several of the better pubs with rooms will even leave a treat on the bed. For a memorable weekend, base yourself in Wells or Blakeney, pair a morning beach walk with an afternoon at a quieter marsh, and finish at a pub with a fire. Pack a towel — your dog will be wet, sandy and delighted.
