Dog Walks in Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea is one of the finest coastal dog-walking towns on the east coast of England. It sits where the salt marshes meet the beach, with a working harbour, a long sandy beach backed by pinewoods, and miles of Norfolk Coast Path running in both directions. If your dog loves sea air, crashing waves and long, flat walks, you'll struggle to find anywhere better.

The town itself is handsome and unhurried — a proper Norfolk fishing harbour with crab shacks, chandleries and pubs clustered around the quay. The beach is a mile's walk or a short trip on the narrow-gauge beach railway, and the famous colourful beach huts on stilts are one of the most photographed scenes in East Anglia. Best Dog Walks in Wells-next-the-Sea

The Holkham Beach and Pine Woods Walk (4 miles, easy) is the headline route — miles of open golden sand backed by shady Corsican pines, with vast tidal flats at low water that any water-loving dog will adore. The longer Holkham Beach & Pinewoods loop extends the same walk to five miles for a proper morning out. Further east, the Stiffkey Salt Marshes Walk is a lower-traffic alternative with big skies and plenty of birdlife. For more coastal miles, the Burnham Overy Staithe to Gun Hill Walk is one of the most underrated walks in Norfolk — remote, quiet and utterly beautiful.

Planning Your Visit

Holkham Estate car park is the best starting point for most of the big walks, with Wells beach car park as a good alternative. Between April and September, dogs must be on leads on parts of Holkham Beach where ground-nesting birds like little terns are breeding — the signed areas change year to year, so check before you go. Be aware of fast incoming tides on the flats. Wells is a genuinely dog-friendly Wells-next-the-Sea destination, with The Victoria at Holkham and The Anchor Cafe both welcoming muddy paws post-walk.
