How Hill is a 365-acre nature reserve in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, managed by the Broads Authority. The reserve is a mosaic of woodland, fen, marsh and open water, providing a perfect introduction to the Broadland landscape.

The Route

Start from the How Hill Study Centre and follow the waymarked trails through the reserve. The Boardwalk Trail crosses the fen on raised walkways, offering views across the marshes to the River Ant. The Woodland Trail passes through alder carr and oak woodland. A longer circuit follows the river towpath and returns across open grazing marsh.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs on leads are welcome on the trails. The boardwalk is narrow in places. The woodland provides welcome shade in summer. The river towpath is the best section for dogs, with easy water access for drinking and paddling. The grazing marshes have cattle in summer.

Practical Information

Free car park at How Hill. The study centre has limited facilities. The nearest village with refreshments is Ludham, about 2 miles away. The Dog Inn in Ludham welcomes dogs. Toilets at the study centre.
