Kielder Water is northern Europe's largest man-made lake, surrounded by England's largest forest. This 4-mile walk follows a section of the lakeside trail through the forest with sweeping water views and the chance to spot red squirrels, ospreys and deer.

The Route

Start at Leaplish Waterside Park and follow the lakeside trail east. The well-maintained path winds through Kielder Forest, alternating between dense spruce woodland and open stretches with views across the vast lake. The forest is home to one of England's largest red squirrel populations, and feeding stations along the route increase your chances of a sighting.

Continue to the Freya art installation, one of many sculptures dotted around the reservoir. The giant head emerging from the forest is a striking sight. A little further on, take the path that loops back through the forest interior, where the darkness and silence of the deep spruce creates an atmospheric experience. Return to Leaplish via the lakeside.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off lead throughout the forest trails. The forest is sheep-free and the wide paths give dogs excellent room to explore. There are numerous access points to the lake for swimming. The visitor centres and cafes have outdoor dog-friendly seating. Kielder is one of the best off-lead dog walking destinations in England.
