Cadair Idris is one of the finest mountains in Snowdonia, steeped in Welsh legend. While the summit route starts from Dolgellau (south side), this entry pairs with the Snowdonia walking network. The Pony Path is the most popular route up, offering a steady climb to the summit at 893 metres.

The mountain is associated with the giant Idris who, legend says, used the summit as his chair (cadair means chair in Welsh). The views from the top stretch across most of Wales and out to the Irish Sea. Llyn Cau, a glacial lake on the southern side, is one of the most dramatic sights in Welsh hillwalking.

Dogs should be fit for mountain walking. Water and wind protection are essential. This is a serious mountain walk that rewards with spectacular scenery.
