Rivelin Valley and the Stepping Stones
Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Rivelin Valley is one of Sheffield's hidden treasures - a wooded gorge following the River Rivelin from the suburbs into the Peak District fringes. Once powering over 20 mills, the valley now offers peaceful woodland walking with old mill ponds, weirs and the famous stepping stones.
The Route
Start from Rivelin Valley Road and follow the nature trail downstream through mixed woodland. Pass a succession of old mill dams and weirs, with interpretive boards explaining the valley's industrial heritage. Cross the river at the stepping stones (a highlight for dogs who love water) and return along the opposite bank. The path is mostly flat with gentle gradients.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off lead through most of the valley. The river is shallow and safe for paddling at the stepping stones and mill ponds. Some sections near roads require leads. Water bowls are often left out by regular dog walkers. The woodland provides shade in summer.
Practical Information
Free parking at several pull-in spots along Rivelin Valley Road. The Rivelin Hotel at the top of the valley welcomes dogs. Nearest facilities in Malin Bridge. The valley can be muddy after rain so boots are recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the stepping stones safe for dogs?
Yes, the stepping stones cross shallow water and most dogs either hop across or paddle through. The river is calm here and only ankle-deep in normal conditions.
Is the valley suitable for pushchairs?
The main path is fairly flat but can be muddy and uneven in places. A sturdy pushchair would manage in dry conditions but it is better suited to walking boots.
