Dog Walks in Chichester
3 walks to explore with your dog in Chichester, West Sussex
Chichester is the cathedral city of West Sussex and one of the best bases in the south for mixing genuine history with serious dog walking. The Roman street plan still runs through the centre, the Cathedral spire is visible from most of the surrounding countryside, and within twenty minutes in any direction you're on the South Downs, in ancient yew forest, or beside the tidal waters of Chichester Harbour.
The city itself is easy to navigate with a dog on the lead — a compact pedestrianised core, the wall walk around the old Roman boundary, and Priory Park behind the cathedral for a quick leg-stretch. But most visitors come here for the South Downs National Park on the northern doorstep, where the chalk ridges and beech hangers offer some of the finest rolling walking in the country.
Best Dog Walks in Chichester
The Devil's Dyke and South Downs Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) is the big-view option — a ridge walk along Britain's longest dry chalk valley with panoramic sightlines across the Weald. Closer to Chichester itself, Kingley Vale Yew Forest (3 to 5 miles, moderate) is something genuinely unusual: a grove of gnarled yews thought to be among the oldest living things in Britain, with a climb onto the downs above for views right down to the coast. For a gentler day, Arundel Park and Swanbourne Lake (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) combines parkland, a reed-fringed lake and the castle backdrop in one well-surfaced loop that suits older dogs and families.
Planning Your Visit
Park at Chichester's city-centre car parks for in-town walks, or head out to the free car parks at West Stoke (for Kingley Vale) and Arundel (pay-and-display near the park gate). Kingley Vale is a National Nature Reserve — dogs are welcome on leads to protect the fragile ground flora and nesting birds. The downs have grazing cattle across much of their open access land, so a reliable recall or a lead is non-negotiable. Afterwards, The Fox Goes Free at Charlton is a gorgeous 400-year-old dog-friendly Chichester-area pub tucked in the Downs, with flagstones, a beer garden and a proper welcome for muddy paws.
