Arundel Park and Swanbourne Lake
Chichester, West Sussex
Arundel is dominated by its fairy-tale castle and cathedral, but the surrounding parkland and lake offer wonderful dog walking. Swanbourne Lake sits in a peaceful valley below the castle, while the wider Arundel Park provides rolling chalk downland with views across the Arun Valley to the South Downs.
The Route
Start from the Mill Road car park and walk along Swanbourne Lake, where swans and ducks glide beneath overhanging willows. Follow the path into Arundel Park through the gate and climb steadily through the chalk grassland. At the top, enjoy views across to Amberley and the meandering River Arun. Descend through the park and return via the town.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs must be on leads around Swanbourne Lake (wildlife and nesting birds). In Arundel Park, dogs can be off lead on the open downland but under close control as deer and cattle graze. Water available at the lake. The park gates are open daily during daylight hours.
Practical Information
Pay-and-display car park on Mill Road. Arundel town has many dog-friendly tea rooms and pubs - the Black Rabbit on the river is excellent. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust centre nearby also welcomes dogs on leads. Toilets in Arundel town centre.
