Dog Walks in Ilkley

3 walks to explore with your dog in Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Ilkley is a handsome Victorian spa town wedged between the River Wharfe and the wild expanse of Ilkley Moor — the bit of Yorkshire made famous by the tongue-in-cheek anthem about wandering the moor without a hat. It's one of the best single-hit dog-walking destinations in West Yorkshire: a proper town with good cafes and independent shops below, and nearly 2,000 acres of heather moorland rising directly from the back streets.

The Wharfe runs along the northern edge of town with a flat riverside path for gentler warm-up walks, but the main event is up on the moor. Within fifteen minutes of leaving the car park you can be standing beneath the Cow and Calf, a pair of gritstone outcrops that have drawn walkers, climbers and picnickers for two centuries. The combination of easy access, big views and genuine wildness makes Ilkley a firm favourite with Leeds and Bradford dog owners.

Best Dog Walks in Ilkley

The Ilkley Moor & Cow and Calf route (3 to 5 miles, moderate) is the classic — a stiff climb up from Wells Road onto the tops, with the distinctive rocks as a natural turnaround point and views stretching across Wharfedale on a clear day. The Ilkley Moor Cow and Calf Walk covers similar ground with a slightly different approach, using the quarry path for a shadier ascent. For a longer loop taking in more of the open heather, Ilkley Moor and the Cow and Calf Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) adds the Twelve Apostles stone circle and a broader traverse of the plateau. All three are proper moorland walks rather than gentle strolls — expect wind, weather and a happily exhausted dog by the end.

Planning Your Visit

The Cow and Calf pay-and-display car park is the most direct start, but parking in town and walking up via Wells Road adds a lovely extra mile through wooded paths. Ground-nesting birds breed across the moor between April and July, so leads are mandatory in that window. There's very little water on the tops so carry your own. Post-walk, Ilkley's Grove is packed with dog-welcoming coffee shops and delis, and for anything behavioural, Pennine Dog Training is a well-regarded local outfit. A dog-friendly Ilkley afternoon tea followed by a river stroll is a fitting end to a big day on the moor.
