Bodmin Moor Rough Tor Walk
Bude, Cornwall
Rough Tor is the second-highest point in Cornwall at 400 metres, a wild granite summit on Bodmin Moor with a character completely different from the coastal walks that dominate Cornish walking. The moorland is open, exposed and wonderfully atmospheric.
The Route
Start from the small car park at the end of the lane near Roughtor Farm. Cross the open moor towards the summit, navigating between granite tors and boggy patches. The ascent is gradual and the summit reveals panoramic views across Bodmin Moor, the north coast and Dartmoor beyond. Descend via Brown Willy, Cornwall's highest point, if extending the walk.
Dog-Friendly Details
Bodmin Moor is excellent for dogs who love open space and freedom. Dogs can be off-lead across the moor, though livestock (cattle and ponies) graze the area, so recall must be reliable. The moor has streams and pools for drinking. Boggy sections can be deep, so stick to the drier ground marked by granite outcrops.
Practical Information
Small free car park at Roughtor Road end. No facilities on the moor. Wear boots and carry waterproofs. Navigation can be tricky in mist. The nearest refreshments are in Camelford, about 4 miles away.
Frequently Asked Questions
