Dog Walks in Bude

5 walks to explore with your dog in Bude, Cornwall

Bude is the north Cornish coast at its rawest — big Atlantic surf, cliff-top turf bouncy underfoot, and a harbour canal that cuts improbably inland through the middle of town. For dog owners, it's the sort of place where you can let a salty, sandy dog sleep it off in the car knowing the day has genuinely worn them out.

The town sits on the South West Coast Path with Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches a short stroll from the centre, and a string of smaller coves scattered north and south. Unlike the prettier south-coast villages, Bude is a proper working holiday town — wide skies, bakeries, surf shops and room to breathe — and it makes a natural base for exploring Hartland, Tintagel and Bodmin in a single long weekend.

Best Dog Walks in Bude

The standout day out is the Tintagel Castle and Coastal Path (4 miles, moderate) — a clifftop route wrapped around the Arthurian headland with vertiginous views down onto Merlin's Cave and the black rocks below. Inland, Bodmin Moor Rough Tor Walk (5 miles, moderate) swaps sea air for open moorland, climbing Cornwall's second-highest point on a granite-strewn path that feels a world apart from the beaches. Northwards, the Hartland Point and Quay Walk (6 miles, moderate) is one of the most dramatic stretches on the entire coast path — folded, shattered cliffs, a lighthouse and a proper sense of remoteness. Dog walks in Bude tend to be as wild or as gentle as the weather allows.

Planning Your Visit

Summerleaze car park is the easiest town base, with Crackington Haven and Hartland Quay the picks for the bigger walks. Rough Tor has its own moorland car park off the Camelford road. The coast path has unfenced drops throughout — a reliable recall or a long line is essential, and the wind can catch smaller dogs off-guard on exposed sections. Bude's beaches have seasonal dog restrictions between Easter and October on the central sand, but the northern end of Summerleaze and most of Crooklets remain accessible year-round. Inland, The Blisland Inn on Bodmin Moor is a classic walkers' pub worth the detour, and dog-friendly Bude cafes along Belle Vue will happily produce a bowl of water without asking twice.
