Hartland Point and Quay Walk
Bude, Cornwall
Hartland Point is one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in Devon, where jagged black cliffs plunge into the Atlantic with the force of both the Bristol Channel and the open ocean meeting. The walk combines the rugged coast with the sheltered beauty of Hartland Quay.
The Route
Start from Hartland Quay car park and follow the South West Coast Path north towards Hartland Point lighthouse. The cliffs here are extraordinary, with twisted layers of rock standing vertical against the sea. Pass Blackpool Mill and continue to the lighthouse, then return along the same coast path. For a longer loop, return via St Nectan's Church and quiet lanes.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off-lead on the coast path but must be under control near the cliff edge, which is unfenced and drops vertically in places. The coast path is exposed and windy. Dogs must be on leads through farmland. No beach access at Hartland Quay in rough conditions.
Practical Information
Hartland Quay car park (charges apply). The Wreckers' Retreat pub at the quay is dog-friendly. No other facilities on the route. Bring water and be prepared for changeable weather. The coast here faces the full Atlantic.
