Dog Walks in Keswick

2 walks to explore with your dog in Keswick, Cumbria

Keswick is the northern Lake District's walking capital — a grey-stone market town strung along the head of Derwentwater with Skiddaw rising behind and the Borrowdale valley opening up to the south. For anyone bringing a dog to Cumbria, it's arguably the best base in the national park: the fells start literally at the edge of town, the lake provides a flat alternative when the weather closes in, and the town itself has more dog-friendly cafes per square mile than almost anywhere in England.

The pencil museum, the Saturday market and the theatre by the lake give you plenty to do on a rest day, but most visitors come with one thing in mind: the walking. And Keswick delivers. You can be on a proper mountain summit within two hours of parking, or on a flat lakeshore path within two minutes — the choice is yours every morning.

Best Dog Walks in Keswick

The Catbells Ridge Walk (4.5 miles, moderate) is the beloved local classic — a short but steep climb onto a narrow ridge with panoramic views across Derwentwater to Skiddaw and Blencathra, and down into the Newlands Valley on the western side. It's accessible, the distances are manageable, and the rewards are out of all proportion to the effort. For a gentler day, the Borrowdale Valley and Lodore Falls Walk (6 miles, easy to moderate) follows the Derwent upstream through arguably the most beautiful valley in England — mixed oak woodland, tumbling waterfalls, the famous Bowder Stone, and the Jaws of Borrowdale narrows where the valley pinches to a single lane. Both walks give you the essential Lake District in a single outing.

Planning Your Visit

The Hawes End car park (accessible via the Derwentwater launch, which carries dogs) is the usual Catbells starting point, and Rosthwaite or Bowder Stone for the Borrowdale walk. Catbells has narrow sections with genuine drops on either side — not a serious scramble, but not the place for a dog that pulls hard on the lead either. Livestock grazes throughout Borrowdale, so leads around sheep are essential, and the valley has Herdwicks on the fells year-round. Keswick itself is a model of dog-friendly Keswick welcome — nearly every cafe on the main streets will bring a water bowl without being asked, and most pubs are happy to have dogs in the bar areas. Arrive early on weekends; parking fills up by mid-morning in high season.
