Borrowdale is often described as the most beautiful valley in England, and this walk from Keswick follows the shore of Derwentwater to the Lodore Falls and into the valley. The scenery is quintessential Lake District at its very best.

The route follows the lakeside through ancient oak woodland before reaching Lodore Falls, a series of cascades tumbling through mossy rocks. Continuing into Borrowdale, the valley narrows dramatically with fells rising steeply on both sides.

Dogs love the lake access, woodland trails and river crossings. The valley is peaceful compared to more popular Lake District routes. Castle Crag, a small but dramatic summit, can be added for those wanting more challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Lodore Falls like?

Lodore Falls is a series of cascades tumbling over mossy rocks through woodland. They are most impressive after heavy rain when the water volume is high. In dry periods they can be a trickle. The falls are accessed through the Lodore Falls Hotel grounds (small charge).

Is Borrowdale really the most beautiful valley?

It is frequently described as such. The combination of ancient oak woodland, dramatic fells, the River Derwent and the stunning Derwentwater create scenery that rivals anything in Britain.
