Catbells Ridge Walk
Keswick, Cumbria
Catbells is one of the Lake District's most beloved fell walks, a compact ridge that rises to 451 metres above the western shore of Derwentwater. The walk is popular with families and dog walkers because it offers proper mountain scenery without the length or technical difficulty of higher peaks.
The Route
Start from the Hawse End car park and follow the well-worn path up the ridge. The ascent is steady with a few steeper rocky sections near the top. The summit is a grassy dome with stunning 360-degree views across Derwentwater, Borrowdale, Skiddaw and the distant High Stile range. Descend to the north and loop back along the lakeshore via the Allerdale Ramble.
Dog-Friendly Details
Catbells is excellent for dogs. The terrain is mostly grassy with some rocky sections that are easily navigated. Dogs can be off-lead on the fell away from livestock. The lakeshore return offers swimming opportunities in Derwentwater. Keep leads handy as sheep graze the lower slopes.
