The Chatsworth Estate Walk explores the magnificent parkland surrounding one of England's grandest stately homes. This 4-mile circular takes you through ancient deer park, along the River Derwent and through woodland with sweeping views of the house and its famous Capability Brown landscape.

The Route

Begin at the Calton Lees car park and follow the riverside path north towards Chatsworth House. Cross the elegant bridge and enter the parkland, where herds of fallow and red deer roam freely. Follow the park road uphill, then cut across the open grassland towards Stand Wood. The woodland section climbs steadily with glimpses of the house below, before emerging at the Hunting Tower - a Tudor lookout with panoramic views.

Descend through mixed woodland past the Emperor Fountain viewpoint and back to the river. The final section follows the Derwent south through water meadows back to the car park. On a clear day, the views of Chatsworth House framed by the Derbyshire hills are unforgettable.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome in the park and gardens on leads. The estate is generally very dog-friendly, though leads are mandatory due to the resident deer herds. The River Derwent provides lovely swimming spots on warm days. Dog waste bins are provided throughout the estate. Note that dogs are not allowed inside the house.

Practical Information

Parking is available at Calton Lees (free) or the main Chatsworth car park (charges apply). The estate farm shop and cafe are dog-friendly with outdoor seating. The walk is suitable year-round but the parkland sections can be exposed to wind. Allow extra time to explore the gardens if you have someone to hold the dog.
