Dog Walks in Bakewell
10 walks to explore with your dog in Bakewell, Derbyshire
Bakewell is the beating heart of the White Peak and, for many visitors, the ideal introduction to the Peak District with a dog. Straddling the River Wye, with its famous five-arched bridge and the home of the original Bakewell pudding, the town combines a proper day out with immediate access to some of Derbyshire's most scenic and accessible walking.
The riverside path through Bakewell itself is a lovely in-town stroll — you'll see mallards, resident dippers and plenty of other dogs enjoying the water. Just outside town, the landscape opens into the rolling farmland and limestone dales that define the White Peak, and the Monsal Trail starts on Bakewell's doorstep, making it one of the easiest places in the UK to get onto a properly scenic long-distance path without navigating anything complicated.
Best Dog Walks in Bakewell
The Monsal Trail Walk (6 miles one way, easy) is the standout — a former railway line running through limestone dales with multi-arched viaducts and tunnels, perfect for dogs of any age. The Chatsworth House Estate Walk (4 miles, moderate) takes you through parkland managed by the Devonshire family, with free-ranging deer to keep on leads for. For water lovers, the Chee Dale Stepping Stones Walk and the Miller's Dale Circular Walk are both classic White Peak dale walks — limestone cliffs, clear rivers, and plenty of shade in summer.
Planning Your Visit
Bakewell Agricultural Centre has the largest town car park and is a good starting point. For the Monsal Trail, Hassop Station or Monsal Head are better jumping-off points. Dogs must be on leads on the Chatsworth Estate where deer graze, and the gardens charge an entry fee even for dogs. Post-walk, The Devonshire Arms is a genuinely dog-friendly Bakewell pub with flagstone bars, and Peaks Coffee House welcomes dogs indoors and out. Peak Paws Grooming in town is useful if your dog's picked up too much of the Monsal Trail on the way back.
