Epping Forest is 6,000 acres of ancient woodland straddling the Essex-London border. One of the finest remaining examples of medieval forest in England, it has been a place of recreation for Londoners since Queen Victoria dedicated it to the public in 1882.

The Route

Start from the main car park near the Epping Forest District Museum and head south through the ancient pollarded beech and hornbeam trees. Follow the Centenary Walk markers through High Beach and down to Connaught Water, an ornamental lake popular with birds. Continue through the Lost Pond area before looping back via the Green Ride.

Dog-Friendly Details

Epping Forest is one of the best dog walking destinations near London. Dogs can be off lead throughout most of the forest. The varied terrain of woodland, heath and ponds provides excellent stimulation. Connaught Water and several forest ponds offer swimming. The forest floor is soft and kind to paws.

Practical Information

Several free car parks throughout the forest. The Butler's Retreat cafe at Chingford welcomes dogs outdoors. The Robin Hood pub at Epping is dog-friendly. Toilets at the main visitor centres. The forest is busiest at weekends.
