The Lee Valley is a chain of parks, waterways and nature reserves running along the River Lee on London's eastern edge. The marshes section provides wild, open walking that feels remarkably rural for a location inside the M25.

The Route

Start from Walthamstow Wetlands visitor centre and walk north along the reservoirs. Continue along the River Lee towpath through Tottenham Marshes, a vast open grassland popular with kite flyers and dog walkers. Follow the river to Stonebridge Lock and return via the opposite bank, passing through Walthamstow Marshes SSSI.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead on Tottenham Marshes. Leads are required at Walthamstow Wetlands (nature reserve). The towpath sections allow off-lead walking for well-behaved dogs. The marshes are flat and easy walking. The river provides drinking and some dogs wade at accessible points.

Practical Information

Start from Blackhorse Road (Victoria Line) or Tottenham Hale. Free entry to the wetlands centre. The Engine House cafe at Walthamstow Wetlands is dog-friendly outside. Toilets at the visitor centre.
