Dog Walks in Epping

4 walks to explore with your dog in Epping, Greater London

Epping is London's forest town — sitting on the edge of nearly 6,000 acres of ancient woodland just 20 miles from the city centre. For dog owners living in or around London, it's one of the genuinely great escape hatches: a real forest, reachable by Central Line tube, with miles of bridleways, hornbeam pollards and open glades where dogs can properly run.

The town of Epping itself is small and traditional — a long high street with market stalls, independent shops and a handful of dog-friendly cafes. Most visitors, though, are here for Epping Forest, which is managed by the City of London Corporation and has been a public space for over 140 years. It's one of the few places in the country where you can combine a day out with your dog and reach it entirely by public transport.

Best Dog Walks in Epping

The Epping Forest Ancient Woodland Walk (4.5 miles, easy) is the introduction route — a gentle loop through beech and hornbeam with plenty of off-lead stretches on the main rides. The Epping Forest Centenary Walk (5 miles, easy) follows a waymarked cross-forest route past some of the best-known pollards. For longer days, the Epping Forest Circular from High Beach (6 miles, easy to moderate) adds the viewpoint over the Lea Valley. Nearby, the Lee Valley Marshes Walk gives you a completely different landscape — wetlands, reed beds and river paths — for dogs that like variety.

Planning Your Visit

High Beach is the best-known parking area and has a visitor centre, tea hut and toilets. The Central Line runs to Epping, Theydon Bois and Loughton, all of which put you within walking distance of good forest entry points. Cyclists share the bridleways so a recall is useful. The forest is mostly off-lead friendly, but cattle graze some sections in summer and there are deer in quieter areas — leads near livestock, always. For dog-friendly Epping spots, the high street has several cafes that will bring a bowl of water and a biscuit without making a fuss.
