Etherow Country Park was one of Britain's first country parks and remains one of Greater Manchester's finest green spaces. The walk follows the River Etherow through mixed woodland and past a series of former mill lodges, now peaceful lakes surrounded by mature trees.

The Route

Start from the main car park and follow the path along the northern bank of the Etherow. Pass the main lake (George's Lake) with its resident ducks and geese, then continue upstream through the wooded valley. The path follows the river past cascades and weirs, through dappled woodland. At the far end, cross the footbridge and return on the southern bank for different views of the valley.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome throughout the park and can be off-lead on the woodland paths away from the main lake area. The river provides paddling and swimming at several shallow sections. Keep dogs on leads near the main lake to protect the wildfowl. The woodland paths are well-drained and suitable year-round.

Practical Information

Free car park at the main entrance. Cafe at the visitor centre (dogs welcome outside). Toilets available. The park is popular at weekends, so visit early for a quieter experience. Only 15 minutes from Stockport.
