Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary Walk
Lyndhurst, Hampshire
Bolderwood is one of the most beautiful areas of the New Forest, with towering Douglas fir and Redwood trees planted in the 19th century alongside ancient oak woodland. The deer viewing platform offers the chance to see fallow deer at close range.
The Route
Start from the Bolderwood car park and follow the Tall Trees trail through the impressive conifer plantation, where some trees reach over 40 metres. Continue to the deer viewing platform and observation area. Extend the walk by following the Bolderwood Arboretum Ornamental Drive on foot, passing through mixed woodland with Douglas fir, Western red cedar and Coast redwood.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs must be on leads near the deer viewing area. Away from the deer sanctuary, dogs can be off-lead in the forest. The inclosures (fenced woodland areas) often have specific seasonal rules, so check signs at entry points. The forest floor is soft and forgiving, ideal for dogs.
Practical Information
Free Forestry England car park at Bolderwood. The deer are most active at dawn and dusk but are often visible from the platform during the day. Picnic tables at the car park. No other facilities. The nearest refreshments are in Lyndhurst or Burley.
