Dog Walking in Horncastle

Horncastle is a characterful market town sitting at the southern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, where the River Bain meets the River Waring. Known nationally for its antiques shops, Horncastle also serves as an excellent base for dog walking in some of Lincolnshire's most attractive countryside. The town occupies a sheltered position in the river valley, with the Wolds rising to the north and east and the flatter farmland of central Lincolnshire spreading to the south and west.

Key Walks and Green Spaces

  • The Spa Trail - This converted railway line runs north from Horncastle to Woodhall Spa, following a flat, well-surfaced route through countryside. It is perfect for easy walking and is accessible in all seasons. Dogs can be off lead along much of the trail.
  • The Southern Wolds - The villages to the north and east of Horncastle - Tetford, Belchford, Fulletby, and Hemingby - are surrounded by some of the most scenic walking country in the Wolds. The valleys here are deeper and more wooded than in the northern Wolds, with quiet footpaths winding through a landscape of small fields, copses, and hedgerows.
  • Horncastle Town Walk - A pleasant circular walk can be made along the River Bain through the town, passing the remains of the Roman walls and through the town's parks and green spaces.
  • Scrivelsby - The countryside south of Horncastle towards Scrivelsby offers open farmland walking with long views across central Lincolnshire.

Dog-Friendly Venues

Horncastle's pubs and cafes are generally welcoming to dogs. The town has a good selection of independent cafes where dogs are permitted, and the traditional pubs along the High Street and Bull Ring are accustomed to walkers stopping in after a morning on the Wolds. The surrounding villages also have welcoming pubs - the Black Horse at Donington on Bain and the Red Lion at Tetford are both popular with dog walkers.

Practical Information

Horncastle is reached via the A158 from Lincoln or the A153 from Louth. There are free car parks in the town centre with good capacity. For Wolds walks, parking is typically in village laybys or small car parks. The Spa Trail has a car park at its Horncastle end. The terrain around Horncastle varies from flat and easy on the trails to moderately hilly in the Wolds, so there are options to suit all levels of fitness and mobility. Winter walking in the Wolds valleys can be muddy, but the Spa Trail remains firm year-round.
