Dog Walks in Skipton
7 walks to explore with your dog in Skipton, North Yorkshire
Skipton calls itself "the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales" and for dog walkers, it genuinely lives up to the name. It's a working market town rather than a chocolate-box village — and that's part of its charm. You get a proper high street, a castle, a canal, and within a ten-minute drive you're in some of the most famous dog walks in Yorkshire.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the centre of Skipton, and the towpath is one of the best in-town dog walks in the country — flat, long, and genuinely scenic as it leaves town towards Gargrave. For anything wilder, a short drive gets you to Bolton Abbey, Malham or Brimham Rocks, all of which offer completely different walking experiences in the same county.
Best Dog Walks in Skipton
The Bolton Abbey Riverside Walk (4 miles, easy) is the classic family day out — the River Wharfe, the ruined priory, the stepping stones and a gentle there-and-back that works for any dog. For something more dramatic, Malham Cove and Janet's Foss Walk (4 miles, moderate) takes in a waterfall, a limestone amphitheatre and a classic limestone pavement at the top — truly iconic Dales walking. The Bolton Abbey Strid Walk (5 miles, moderate) extends the Wharfe walk to a narrow, dangerous gorge where the river funnels through rock (keep dogs firmly on leads). Brimham Rocks Circular Walk offers something entirely different: a weathered gritstone playground with a maze of paths.
Planning Your Visit
Skipton has plenty of pay-and-display parking near the canal basin. Bolton Abbey and Malham both have large visitor car parks but get busy on weekends. The Strid is genuinely dangerous for dogs off-lead — take the warning signs seriously. Livestock grazes almost everywhere in the Dales, so expect frequent leash-on stretches. The Malham Cafe is a reliable dog-friendly Skipton-area stop after a morning at the cove, and the town itself has several bakeries and pubs that welcome dogs.
