This spectacular 4-mile circular from Malham village takes in two of the Yorkshire Dales' most impressive natural features: the towering limestone amphitheatre of Malham Cove and the enchanting waterfall at Janet's Foss.

The Route

Begin in Malham village and follow the well-signed path north to Malham Cove. The approach reveals the cove gradually, the 80-metre curved limestone cliff growing more impressive with every step. Steps lead to the top of the cove, where a dramatic limestone pavement stretches before you, the deep fissures (grikes) and flat slabs (clints) creating an otherworldly landscape.

From the top, follow the path east across fields to Gordale Lane, then south to Janet's Foss. This delightful waterfall tumbles into a crystal-clear pool surrounded by moss-covered rocks and ancient trees. Local legend says Janet was a fairy queen who lived behind the falls. Continue south along the lane back to Malham village.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs must be on leads throughout as the walk passes through sheep grazing land. The limestone pavement at the top of the cove requires care, as dogs' paws can slip into the deep grikes. The pool at Janet's Foss provides a lovely cooling spot for dogs in summer. The steps at Malham Cove are steep and may challenge very small dogs.

Practical Information

Parking is available in Malham village (pay and display). The village has a pub, cafe and National Park Centre. The walk involves a steep climb of about 400 steps to the top of the cove, so reasonable fitness is needed. The limestone pavement can be slippery when wet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs climb the steps at Malham Cove?

Most dogs manage the steps fine, though they are steep. Very small or elderly dogs may need help. The views from the top are worth the effort.

Is the limestone pavement safe for dogs?

Take care - the grikes (fissures) between the limestone slabs can be deep. Keep dogs on lead and on the flat clints rather than letting them explore the gaps.

Can dogs swim at Janet's Foss?

Yes, the pool at the base of the waterfall is a lovely spot for a cooling dip. The water is cold but clean.
