Warwick to Leek Wootton Canal Walk
Warwick, Warwickshire
This gentle walk follows the Grand Union Canal from Warwick northwards through the Warwickshire countryside to the pretty village of Leek Wootton. The canal passes through a mix of open farmland and woodland, with narrowboats adding colour to the scene.
The Route
Start from Warwick's Saltisford Canal Centre and walk north along the towpath. Pass through Woodloes Park with its wildflower meadows, then continue along the canal through open countryside. The canal is lined with wildflowers in summer. At Leek Wootton, leave the canal for a loop through the village and woodland before returning along the towpath.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off lead on the towpath (watch for cyclists). The canal has gentle sloping banks for dogs to drink and paddle. The woodland section has good off-lead areas. Narrowboat owners often have treats for passing dogs. Dog waste bins at regular intervals along the canal.
Practical Information
Free parking at Saltisford Canal Centre. The Anchor pub on the canal welcomes dogs. The Annie's Tea Room in Leek Wootton is also dog-friendly. Toilets at the canal centre. The towpath is flat and well-maintained throughout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the towpath paved?
The towpath is a mix of compacted gravel and earth. It is well-maintained and dry in most conditions. Some sections may be muddy after heavy rain. Suitable for most footwear in dry weather.
Can I do this walk as a shorter out-and-back?
Yes, you can turn around at any point. The canal makes navigation simple. The stretch through Woodloes Park (first mile) is particularly pretty and makes a good shorter walk.
