Tintagel Castle and Coastal Path
Bude, Cornwall
Tintagel's dramatic coastline, steeped in Arthurian legend, provides some of the most exhilarating cliff walking in Cornwall. This 4-mile circular explores the spectacular headland, passing the castle ruins and taking in breathtaking views of the wild north Cornwall coast.
The Route
Start from Tintagel village car park and follow the lane down to the cliffs. The path passes close to the English Heritage castle site (dogs are welcome in the castle grounds on leads). Continue along the South West Coast Path heading south, following the cliff edge past dramatic sea stacks and coves. The path is well-maintained but with some steep sections.
At Trevalga, turn inland and follow the footpath across fields back toward Tintagel. The return leg offers gentler countryside walking with views back to the dramatic coastline you have just traversed. The contrast between the wild coast and pastoral farmland is striking.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs are welcome on the coastal path and in the castle grounds on leads. The cliff edges are unfenced in many places so leads are essential for safety. There are no beach access points on this section so swimming opportunities are limited. Water for dogs should be carried as there are few freshwater sources.
Practical Information
Parking is available in Tintagel village. The castle itself is managed by English Heritage and charges admission (dogs on leads welcome in the grounds). The village has several dog-friendly pubs and cafes. The coastal path involves some steep climbs and descents. Strong winds are common on the exposed headland.
