Monsal Trail Walk
Bakewell, Derbyshire
The Monsal Trail follows the old Midland Railway line through the heart of the Peak District's White Peak, passing through tunnels, over viaducts and along the valley of the River Wye. It is one of the most popular traffic-free trails in England.
The Route
Start from Bakewell and follow the trail west through Coombs Road tunnel and along the Wye Valley. The highlight is Monsal Head viaduct, which soars across the valley with spectacular views down to the river. Continue through more lit tunnels (bring a torch for dogs who might be nervous) to Millers Dale. Return the same way or arrange collection.
Dog-Friendly Details
The trail is excellent for dogs. The surface is compacted limestone, smooth and easy on paws. Dogs can be off-lead as there is no traffic, though the trail is shared with cyclists. The tunnels are lit but some dogs may be uncertain on first encounter. The River Wye is accessible at several points for swimming and drinking.
Practical Information
Car parks at Bakewell station and Millers Dale. Hassop Station cafe (on the trail east of Bakewell) is dog-friendly and serves excellent coffee. The trail is accessible and suitable for all abilities. Toilets at car parks.
