This forest walk from the capital of the New Forest takes you through some of the finest ancient and ornamental woodland in southern England to the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. The New Forest is one of the most dog-friendly destinations in the UK.

The route follows the Ornamental Drive through magnificent stands of ancient beech, oak and Douglas fir. The Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary offers a viewing platform where you can watch fallow deer from a safe distance. Dogs must be on a lead near the deer areas.

The New Forest has free-roaming ponies, cattle, pigs and donkeys. Dogs must be kept under close control near livestock at all times. The forest offers outstanding walking with a huge variety of habitats from ancient woodland to open heathland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dogs have to be on a lead in the New Forest?

Dogs do not have to be on a lead everywhere in the New Forest, but they must be under close control at all times due to free-roaming livestock. Between 1 March and 31 July dogs must be on a lead on open access land to protect ground-nesting birds. Many local walkers use long leads as a compromise.

Can I see deer at Bolderwood?

Yes, the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary has a viewing platform where you can watch fallow deer. The best times are early morning or late afternoon. In autumn the deer rut is a spectacular sight. Keep dogs quiet and under control near the deer areas.
