Dog Walks in Dorking
3 walks to explore with your dog in Dorking, Surrey
Dorking is the walking town of the Surrey Hills — a proper market town nestled beneath Box Hill, half an hour by train from London Waterloo. For Londoners with dogs, it's one of the most realistic day-trip options for genuine countryside walking: you can leave Clapham after breakfast and be on a hilltop with your dog before lunch.
The town has a long, independent high street, a weekly market and more dog-friendly cafes per square metre than most places this size. It sits right on the North Downs Way and the Greensand Way, so serious walkers tend to use it as a staging post, but the real reason people visit with their dogs is Box Hill — an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with National Trust-managed woodland, open grassland and one of the most famous viewpoints in the South East.
Best Dog Walks in Dorking
The Box Hill Stepping Stones Walk (3.5 miles, moderate) is the essential route — crossing the River Mole on its famous stones, climbing through beech woodland and emerging on the grassy top with views stretching to the South Downs. The Box Hill Stepping Stones and Summit Walk (4.5 miles, moderate) adds a longer loop taking in the summit trig point and the Smith & Western clearing. For a gentler alternative, the Box Hill and the Stepping Stones short version stays lower on the Mole's riverbank. All three routes are well signposted and reachable directly from the main NT car park.
Planning Your Visit
The National Trust car park at Box Hill is free for NT members and has toilets, a visitor centre and a cafe. Dorking and Box Hill & Westhumble stations both give you rail access from London and Guildford. The stepping stones can be submerged after heavy rain — check conditions before setting off with a nervous dog. Livestock grazes parts of the hill to manage the rare chalk grassland, so leads are essential around cattle. The Little Courtyard Cafe is one of several dog-friendly Dorking spots back in town for a post-walk coffee.
