Box Hill is one of the most famous viewpoints in southern England, a chalk escarpment of the North Downs rising 172 metres above the River Mole. Made famous by the 2012 Olympic cycling road race, it offers woodland, chalk grassland and the popular stepping stones across the river below.

The Route

Start from the stepping stones car park at the foot of the hill. Cross the River Mole via the stepping stones (or the footbridge if the water is high) and climb steeply through box woodland to the summit. Take in the panoramic views across the Weald, then follow the ridge path before descending through Juniper Hall field study centre grounds back to the start.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off lead on Box Hill itself. The stepping stones are fun for water-loving dogs as the river is shallow and slow. Keep dogs on leads near the cafe area and car park at the summit. The climb is steep - take it slowly with older dogs. The box woodland provides excellent shade.

Practical Information

National Trust car park at stepping stones (pay-and-display, free for members). Also parking at the summit. National Trust cafe at the top welcomes dogs outdoors. The Stepping Stones pub at the base is dog-friendly. Toilets at both car parks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs cross the stepping stones?

Most dogs love the stepping stones. The River Mole is shallow and gentle here. Many dogs wade through rather than hopping across the stones. A footbridge is available as an alternative.

How steep is the climb?

The climb from the stepping stones to the summit gains about 130 metres over half a mile. It is steep in places. Take it at a comfortable pace and enjoy the woodland. The view from the top is worth the effort.
