Box Hill Stepping Stones and Summit Walk
Dorking, Surrey
Box Hill is one of the most popular walking destinations in the South East, famous for its chalk grassland summit, stepping stones across the River Mole and stunning views across the Surrey Hills. The hill gained wider fame as a key climb in the 2012 Olympic Road Race.
This walk crosses the River Mole on the famous stepping stones before climbing through ancient box woodland (which gives the hill its name) to the summit. The views from the top stretch across the Weald to the South Downs. The zigzag road and the fort on the hilltop add historic interest.
Dogs enjoy the varied terrain and the river crossing is a particular highlight. The summit area has a National Trust cafe and shop. The stepping stones can be submerged after heavy rain, when an alternative bridge can be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dogs cross the Box Hill stepping stones?
Most dogs manage the stepping stones well, though some prefer to splash through the shallow river alongside them. After heavy rain the stepping stones can be submerged, in which case there is a footbridge nearby as an alternative.
Is Box Hill busy?
Box Hill can be very busy on sunny weekends and bank holidays, especially the summit area. For a quieter experience, visit early morning, weekdays, or explore the less-visited sections away from the summit. Winter walking here is lovely and much quieter.
