Box Hill is one of the most popular walking destinations in the Surrey Hills, a chalk escarpment rising above the River Mole with panoramic views across the Weald. This walk combines the famous stepping stones crossing with the hill-top viewpoint and ancient box woodland.

The Route

Start from the stepping stones car park at the foot of the hill. Cross the River Mole via the stepping stones (which can be submerged after heavy rain) and climb through the ancient box woodland that gives the hill its name. The path zigzags up the steep chalk hillside to the summit, where views extend for miles across Surrey and Sussex. Follow the ridge path to the National Trust viewpoint and cafe, then descend via the quieter Juniper Top trail back to the river.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead on most of the walk, though leads are needed near the cafe area and through any livestock fields. The River Mole provides excellent paddling at the stepping stones. The ancient woodland is full of interesting scents. The climb is steep in places but manageable for fit dogs of all sizes.

Practical Information

Stepping stones car park (free, limited spaces) or Box Hill summit car park (National Trust, charges apply). Box Hill and Westhumble station is a 10-minute walk from the stepping stones. The National Trust cafe at the summit welcomes dogs in the outdoor area. Toilets at the summit car park.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs use the stepping stones?

Most dogs manage the stepping stones well. After heavy rain, they may be submerged, in which case there is a footbridge nearby as an alternative.

Is Box Hill steep?

Yes, the climb from the river to the summit is steep with a gain of about 130 metres. The zigzag path makes it manageable but it will be a workout for both you and your dog.
