Holkham Beach & Pinewoods
Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Route Overview
Holkham Beach is one of the finest stretches of sand in England, and this 5-mile walk takes you through the atmospheric Corsican pinewoods, across the vast sand flats, and along the edge of the saltmarshes that fringe the North Norfolk coast. Starting from the Lady Anne's Drive car park, the route passes through a belt of pinewoods - dark, fragrant, and utterly distinctive - before emerging onto the immense beach. At low tide, the sand stretches for hundreds of metres towards the distant sea, creating a sense of space and openness that is truly breathtaking.
The route follows the beach westward towards Burnham Overy, with the dunes and pinewoods on your left and the tide line to your right. After roughly 2 miles, the path turns inland through the saltmarsh edge and returns via a raised boardwalk and the pinewood trail. The terrain is a mixture of soft sand, firm damp sand near the waterline, pine-needle forest paths, and short boardwalk sections.
This is a walk of extraordinary beauty and scale. The vast Norfolk sky dominates, and the combination of beach, forest, and marsh creates a landscape unlike anywhere else in England. It is a magical place to walk with a dog, offering freedom, variety, and sensory stimulation in abundance.
Dog-Friendly Features
Holkham Beach is a paradise for dogs. Dogs can run off lead on the vast beach with acres of space to sprint, play, and explore. The shallow water at the tide's edge is perfect for paddling and splashing. The pinewoods offer sheltered, shaded walking with wonderful scents. Dog waste bins are provided at the car park and at the main beach access points. Be aware that parts of the beach fall within the Holkham National Nature Reserve, and seasonal restrictions may apply in the nesting areas. Always check signs at the entrance. The soft sand can tire dogs quickly, so carry water and allow extra time.
Getting There & Parking
Lady Anne's Drive car park (NR23 1RG) is the main access point, operated by the Holkham Estate. A parking fee applies year-round. The car park is large but fills up on summer weekends and bank holidays. Arrive before 10am for the best chance of a space. Alternative access is via Wells-next-the-Sea beach car park to the east.
Seasonal Tips
Holkham is stunning in all seasons. Summer offers warm paddling and long days, but the beach is at its busiest. Autumn and winter bring wild skies, huge flocks of geese overhead, and peaceful solitude. Spring sees the saltmarshes come alive with colour. The pinewoods provide shelter from wind and rain, making the walk viable in poor weather. Check tide times before setting out - at high tide, the beach narrows considerably and some routes may be cut off.
