Holkham Beach is regularly voted one of the best beaches in Britain, a vast sweep of golden sand backed by an ancient pine forest. This 4-mile walk combines the expansive beach with the atmospheric pinewoods, creating one of Norfolk's finest walks.

The Route

Start from Lady Anne's Drive car park and walk through the iconic Corsican pine woodland that separates the car park from the beach. The trees frame views of the sand and sea ahead, creating one of the most photographed approaches to any British beach. Emerge onto the vast expanse of Holkham Beach, where the sand stretches for miles in both directions.

Turn left and walk along the beach toward the distant sand dunes. At low tide, the beach is hundreds of metres wide and the sense of space is extraordinary. After a mile and a half, cut inland through the dunes and follow the path through the pine woods back to the start. The woodland is home to red squirrels and nesting birds.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round with no seasonal restrictions. The vast open space is perfect for off-lead running. The sea is shallow and safe for swimming. Dogs should be on leads through the pine woods during the bird nesting season (April to August) as the woodland is home to rare breeding birds.

Practical Information

Lady Anne's Drive car park charges a flat fee. The beach is tidal so check times before visiting. At low tide, it is a long walk to the sea. Wellington boots or waterproofs are advisable as the approach can be damp. The Victoria Inn at Holkham is an excellent dog-friendly pub nearby. Wells-next-the-Sea is a short drive away with additional amenities.
